Some more life drawing from Rad's class. These were really quick 1 minute gestures and Rad wanted us to get as far away from what the model actually looks like as possible. We used the model as a guide to draw our own design in a specific pose. The design my drawings evolved into reminds me of Clem from Chris Blain's "Gus". Check him out if you haven't!

Last week we did some life drawing in Phil's class. He really stressed for us to study the figure, how it twists and how the form wraps, which is a total different approach to the life drawing I've been accustom to here at school. This class has had a huge impact on my thought process and approach, and I know he stalks the internet like a hawk, so I'm gonna publicly thank him for all of his inspiration and guidance. Thanks Phil!

Phil gave us this great assignment to redesign a classic villain in a Mexican folk art or Mayan/Aztec style. I'd say this is about 90% done,I could no doubt spend the next week just adding details to this. The snakes are a sign of things to come!>>>

Galo de Barcelos

Last month was my Mom's birthday, her name's Barb. For the special occasion I made her this little drawing so that she could hang in her kitchen. She's got a bit of a rooster theme going on in the kitchen, and specifically a few statues of this guy, the Galo de Barcelos. He comes from an old Portuguese folk tale stating that way back in the day, at a rich man's banquet, some silver cutlery was stolen. A poor little pauper was accused and tried for the crime, but professed his innocence. Things were looking pretty grim for the pauper until the judge gave him one last chance to prove his case. He noticed a rooster in a nearby basket and said that if he was innocent the rooster would crow. The rooster crowed and the pauper was let free.

That's just one version of the story, I read another version where the judge was going to eat a cooked rooster, and the dead, cooked rooster crowed. Pretty crazy right?! Next year I'm thinking of giving Barb a drawing of that version of the story, she probably won't put that one up on the wall. But that's my story about the Galo de Barcelos and Barb's kitchen, later.

School has just started back up again for the Spring semester, and that's exciting and all. But spending time at home felt really great, and I'd like to think that no matter how terrible the weather is here in LA right now, that back home it looks exactly like this drawing! This is a place called Seaport Village, it's a neat little place to hang out and sketch right on the bay in San Diego. Time to face reality and start working on my film!

Here's a collaboration I did with my buddy Phil. Since he's into tattooing I thought it'd be cool if we did some kind of collaboration, so he gave me this awesome line drawing he had laying around and I couldn't help but color it in for him. He's real happy with it and wants to do a couple more and make some prints. So maybe I'll have those up here in the near future.
